The Medavie Health Foundation does outstanding work contributing to the well-being of Canadians. They sponsor countless community-based organizations and programs, working to ensure that Atlantic Canadians can easily access support to prevent and treat health issues or challenges. As contributing to community development is a core value ours, the Medavie Health Foundation is just one reason we are proud to offer Blue Cross health insurance products.

Here are some initiatives that you’re supporting directly when you choose health insurance from Blue Cross.

1.    LEAVE OUT VIOLENCE (LOVE) NOVA SCOTIA

leave-out-violence-logoLOVE Nova Scotia uses media arts and self-expression as a way to support youth who have experienced violence. LOVE focuses on building leadership skills, self-esteem and critical thinking in youth by cultivating their written, photographic, and social skills.

The program addresses issues such as suicide prevention and intervention, bullying and cyber-bullying, family violence, racism, and poverty. LOVE provides young people with essential tools to reduce the effects of violence in their own lives and help others to do the same.

LOVE has received $30,000 in funding to date as part of the Medavie Health Foundation’s annual Grants programStay up-to-date with the LOVE by following them on Facebook.

2.    SIGNALS OF SUICIDE (SOS)

They provide training on recognizing signals of suicide, and tools to effectively reach out to somebody sending these signals.

The SOS program is presented by a qualified facilitator to students in schools across Prince Edward Island. Each 75-minute workshop combines interactive learning methods with a short video to explore suicide prevention among participants between 14-19 years old.

Medavie Blue Cross has been supporting Signals of Suicide for three years, providing $45,000 to assist the programs efforts. Click here to learn more about the program.

3.    LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL

A flagship program of the Canadian Mental Health AssociationLiving Life To The Full offers interactive courses that help at-risk populations cope with low-mood, anxiety, and stress disorders. Over the course of multiple workshops, individuals gain an understanding of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours, and are given techniques to acquire positive mental health outcomes.

4.    ATLANTIC WELLNESS COMMUNITY CENTRE (OPEN DOORS)

atlantic-wellness-centre-goodThe Atlantic Wellness Community Centre (AWCC) provides free and consistent access to mental health care for youth aged 12-21 in Southeastern New Brunswick. AWCC also coordinates service between important stakeholders such as family doctors and school guidance counsellors to provide a seamless healthcare experience.

The Open Doors initiative at AWCC is helping to reduce wait times for youth seeking mental health services in the region. As you may have read in this blog post, through the Foundation’s $40,000 funding commitment, Open Doors is able to provide an additional 1200 hours of therapy per year. Click here to learn more about the Atlantic Wellness Community Centre.

 5.    THE HEALTHY CHANGE PROJECT

medavie-health-foundation-goodThe Healthy Change Project connects Medavie employees with Medavie Health Foundation partners. This is part of their commitment to creating healthy change, and allows employees of Blue Cross to see first-hand the projects they are involved in through their efforts as Medavie employees.

Since the project was launched in October 2015, employees of Blue Cross and Medavie EMS have been hard at work helping out their charity partners. Employees have worked to freshen up the Pointe-Saint-Charles YMCA with a few coats of paint. In Quebec, they volunteered their time at a Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event, supporting the YWCA’s efforts to take care of women and girls who are victims of sexualized violence. Halifax Medavie EMS employees spent a day preparing home-cooked meals for Phoenix Youth Programs.

As you may have read, the work accomplished through programs like The Healthy Change Project is one of the many reasons we are honoured to be a part of the Blue Cross community.
